Growing Greener: Planting for the Future at Patterdale Estate

Here at The Patterdale Estate, we believe in nurturing the beautiful landscape that surrounds us. In February, we’ve taken another step towards enhancing our natural environment by planting a new 70-meter hedgerow on our farmland.

This vital biodiverse wildlife corridor, designed to connect a lush riparian strip along Grisedale Beck to an existing woodland, provides safe passage and habitat for a variety of local species.

We’re incredibly grateful to the Lake District Foundation and their “Real Hedge Fund” for their generous support. Their grant has enabled us to purchase the necessary trees, protective shelters, and fencing to ensure the hedgerow’s successful establishment.

A Rich Mix for a Rich Habitat

Our new hedgerow is all about quality and diversity. We’ve planted a carefully selected mix of native species, including:

  • Dog Rose: Known for its beautiful pink blooms and vitamin-rich hips.
  • Dogwood: Providing vibrant winter colour with its red stems.
  • Quickthorn (Hawthorn): A classic hedgerow staple, offering dense cover and berries.
  • Hazel: A valuable source of nuts and habitat.
  • Wild Cherry: Adding a splash of springtime blossom and delicious fruit.
  • Blackthorn: Offering thorny protection and sloe berries in autumn.

To give these young trees the best start in life, we’ve installed protective fencing to keep them safe from grazing livestock. This will allow them to establish strong roots and grow into a thriving hedgerow.

Looking to the Future

We’re excited to watch this hedgerow mature over the next few years as it begins to provide invaluable habitat for wildlife, contributing to the overall health of our ecosystem.

At The Patterdale Estate, we’re committed to sustainable practices that benefit both our guests and the environment. We believe that by working together, we can preserve the beauty of the Lake District for generations to come.

Stay tuned for updates on the progress of our new hedgerow, and we hope you enjoy the natural beauty of Patterdale on your next visit!
